Curious if there is any published or known information as to the specifications (wattage, channels, ohms) regarding the subwoofer amplifier for '03-'11 Town Cars.

With no response, I went ahead and moved forward replacing the stock FOMOCO 8" woofer with another one utilizing the original Town Car subwoofer box and amp. I had purchased and installed a 2003 Lincoln Blackwood FOMOCO 8" subwoofer box and installed it in my 2002 F150 SuperCrew Harley Davidson. That box, much like the Town Car box is the blow molded plastic and has limited depth. That 8" speaker in that box was a 1.6 ohm dual voice coil unit identified as made by Alpine with the amplifier being a 2 channel 2 ohm. I replaced it with a Pyle 8" 4 ohm dual voice coil speaker wired to 2 ohms & used an aftermarket amp instead of the Ford one. While Pyle wasn't my first choice, it was the only one that had the proper depth and was dual voice coil. It was also cheap so if it didn't work, I was out very little. It worked and sounded much better than the stock speaker. Looking at the Town Car speaker, it appeared to be the same one as the Blackwood enclosure. However, once removed, the speaker is not the same. It is a single voice coil and assuming that it is a 4 ohm speaker.

So, I replaced it with the same Pyle 8" dual voice coil and wired it down to 2 ohms. Sounds much better than the 16 year old subwoofer speaker that came out. Although, it's a gamble to see if the stock amplifier is capable of a 2 ohm load. Since it is my intent to eventually remove and replace the stock subwoofer unit with aftermarket amp, woofer and enclosure, we will gamble to see if the amp can survive at 2 ohms. Will let you know if it works or gives up. Here are some photographs from this weekends removal/replacement. IMG_4590.JPG IMG_4591.JPG IMG_4592.JPG IMG_4593.JPG IMG_4594.JPG IMG_4595.JPG

I did something similar with my 90's factory powered sub, worked out quite well.
Unless you have it at 3/4 volume or more regularly for long periods I bet the amp lives.

Hi, Interesting reading. I also want to upgrade/replace the subwoofer and maybe the amp for it. Was it enough depth for the woofer or is it room for one with deeper measure? Also are you planing to replace the amp?

Well that didn't take long. Amp stops working and is very hot. Looks like it can't handle the 2 ohm load. Kinda figures that the amp that Ford spec'd for this sub would be cheap and work with the intended speaker only. Going to wire the speaker to one voice coil (4 ohm) and see if it will play.

The original speaker was slightly (less than 1/8") thinner than the Pyle. But because the enclosure is blow molded plastic, it has some give to accommodate the new speaker. Fit very good, with all the holes lining up. The mounting depth as stated by Pyle is 3.7" (https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PLPW6D-6-Inch-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B007JV7F4W?th=1) , so probably any woofer that is this size or less would work. The problem will be finding one that fits AND work with the factory amp. No one responded to my original question and I can't find information about the specifications of the Ford subwoofer amp. I would expect that it isn't much more than 50 watts max at 4 ohms given the size of the power wires into the amp.

As for the amp, it was always my intention to replace the factory sub and amp. I have the components, but trying to find the time to complete the install. I have replaced all the factory speakers with Infinity Kappa 6x8 speakers ( Infinity Kappa 682.11cf or Amazon.com: Infinity KAPPA 682.11cf Peak Power Handling 300w 6"x8"/5"x7" Two Way Car Audio: Electronics). I had used them in my F150 and they sound amazing. Especially if you add some amplification (which I did with the F150 & intend to do with the Town Car). I just replaced the factory head unit (cassette had failed) with a Kenwood DDX9903s. I am adding a back up camera and a front camera as this unit has two camera inputs.

The replacement of the factory speakers and using the factory head unit made a world of difference in the sound within the vehicle. But after replacing the head unit with the Kenwood, it jumped light years in sound quality (even without the factory sub working). The Town Car is so quiet, really the perfect auto environment for a quality sound system. Also, like a lot of things with the Panther platform cars, it's pretty easy to work on the car.

I used this cheap little sob in my 90 which was an amazingly good speaker for like, no money. They have to be selling at a huge loss.

Heeeyyy MachMarcus what's up? Did you ever complete your full install, amp, subs, camera, etc? Did the sub work better with the factory amp wired to 4 ohms? Inquiring minds must know lol.

Btw, I connected two 8 ohm, single coil, 12'' sub woofers to the stock amp in my 98' navigator and and they work great. I do not appear to be lacking for power and the amp power cable is pretty thin as you observed with the Town Car amp. My point in mentioning this is maybe you just need to find the sweet spot for your factory amp, though if you have completed your build this point is moot lol.

Hi...I got the new speakers in yesterday and the industrial facility garbage out. The stock sub sounds mostly respectable when you have a good arrangement of front-stage speakers. I put in some Rockford Fosgate Punch P1683 6x8s patched the associations. They sound astounding with the pleasant Kenwood deck I have. I actually haven't found any data out of the stock sub amp. I believe it's 100 watts.

I was astonished to see the stock speakers really were 2-path rather than simply paper woofers, you sure couldn't tell they had positively no highs simply sloppy mid-range.

I am using Skar Audio EVL-12 sub, the sound quality and bass are amazing. Really enjoying this one after using some JBL ones. Plus, upgraded my head unit to Pioneer and got an Alpine amp!! The sound is awesome!! If someone looking for a 12 inch subwoofer then I would recommend you to check out this guide.

Frankly, I don't see it as spamming. Notwithstanding that it was his first post, the link was on-topic.

I've been running auto forums for 20 years, trust me it's spam. Hey the report button is here now, it must not show up until I have a certain number of posts.
